Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the ability to contest specific calls from the official, following the practice already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
